Generating a playlist
An evening's viewing, a season of a series, everything by one director — a playlist is the way to hand a list of files to a player in the right order.
, or Ctrl+G. A three-step wizard opens.
- Choose what to consider: all movies, the selected movies, all TV series or the selected series. The program then checks which of them actually have a video file that exists on the disk right now — only those can go into a playlist.
- Tick the ones you want and put them in order with the up and down buttons. Invert flips the whole selection, which is quicker when you want most of them.
- Choose the format and the file name. Three formats are offered, each
shown together with the program registered to open it on this computer:
Run associated program opens the playlist as soon as it is written, so the film starts playing.
WPL Windows Media Player's own format. M3U8 The universal one, in UTF-8 — the safe choice, and the only one that handles non-Latin file names reliably. PLS Older, still understood by many players.
Movies without a Local path, and movies whose file has been moved or deleted, are left out — a playlist pointing at files that are not there is worse than no playlist. If nothing at all is offered, none of the selected movies has a working link to a file. See Adding a movie from a video file.
For a series, choose Selected TV Series and the episodes come out in order. That is the simplest way to queue up a season.
